Talk Voice - Talk 4: Tracey Maloney and Janet Shell
TUESDAY 3 September 2024
18:00 – 20:00 BST
ONLINE EVENT
The BVA's mission in 2024 is the speaking voice. A series of six online talks will take place throughout the year. We all need a working voice to communicate effectively. We tend to take it for granted - until something goes wrong. Voice loss and strain can have a devastating impact on work, family life and relationships, education and leisure. Talk Voice is a six-part online lecture series about the speaking voice covering topics such as the impact of serious life events or illness on the voice, how to best care for your voice and improve vocal function, and how to communicate more effectively.
Speakers include Mark Mardell, Polly Evans, Dr. Nikos Spantideas, Dr. Tom Harris, D’Arcy Smith and many more!
Talk Voice - Talk Four: Tracey Maloney and Janet Shell
CLASS ACT: Alerting teachers to the need for voice care and management and becoming a real presence in the classroom.
Tracey and Janet explore what is being offered currently through training provider E-Qualitas on vocal health for teachers. Janet shares some of the findings she has made over many years and some of her content which has helped teachers take charge of their voice.
Tracey Maloney has worked in education for more than 25 years. She began her career as a teacher of English, then working as Head of Department and in SLT roles across a range of contexts. Leaving schools, she became a Subject Advisor for Richmond Upon Thames and has since worked as an independent English consultant, reviewing and auditing the teaching and learning in a variety of schools and settings. She has worked as a literacy consultant for the London Grid for Learning, helping to design curriculum content for English departments and also working with authors to further promote reading in schools on Reading Zone Live. Dedication to the subject of English has led to her joining the Board as a Trustee of the English Association where she is also a Fellow. She has a MA in English in Education from King’s College. Tracey has worked with E-Qualitas for a number of years and is the ITT Director, overseeing both the primary and secondary initial teacher training programmes. A keen interest in curriculum development has led to a position as Trustee of a large MAT, chairing the education committee and overseeing the development of a trust wide curriculum to raise the aspirations and broaden the horizons of pupils in all trust schools. She is a Chair of Governors of her local secondary school, remaining committed to working with teachers and leaders to further develop their knowledge and skills, whilst sharing and discovering new approaches and discourse around education.
Janet Shell is a mezzo-soprano who initially trained as a secondary school teacher and taught for 5 years. She has had an elite singing career and currently teaches singing at Eton College and runs a private singing teaching practice. Janet stepped down from AOTOS council this summer where she had been Comms director and a charity trustee for 6 years. She founded Talking Voice in 2007 and works in the education and business sectors, delivering vocal health, presence and awareness programmes around the country and is a long-standing partner with E-Qualitas, one of the country’s leading providers in teacher training in the UK. Recently, Janet was added to the support team for trainees who identified as requiring further coaching in voice & presence and she works closely with Tracey Maloney to help deliver confident and enlightened teachers into schools.
