BVA AGM and Annual Study Day: Sing Again – Rehabilitating the singing voice
SATURDAY 21 September 2024
9.15 – 17:00 BST (Registration from 9.15)
Venue: University College Hospital Education Centre, 250 Euston Road, London NW1 2PG
LIVE and STREAMED EVENT (VIDEO RECORDED)
Whatever the musical genre, singers at any level – professional, student or amateur, adult or child – can experience voice loss or injury. The effect can feel catastrophic. Fortunately, with the right treatment, a pathway through vocal rehabilitation can be successfully negotiated. In recent years, remarkable strides have been made in surgery, speech therapy, singing pedagogy, and physical therapies such as massage, all of which offer a hugely improved outlook for patients.
This BVA study day highlights several aspects of current practice and research. The opening session outlines the special considerations needed when operating on singers, given by Dr Nick Hamilton, ENT surgeon and laryngologist at UCLH. Insight into the approach of an interdisciplinary voice clinic comes from Rehab Awad and Linda Hutchison, from one of the UK’s leading voice teams at Lewisham Hospital. Different life stages require tailored approaches; sessions addressing the specific needs of both ageing voices and children are presented by Abi Simpson and Dr Rebecca Moseley-Morgan, and Pamela Hay.
This event will benefit any professional who works with singers: clinicians, teachers, musical directors, choral leaders, as well as singers themselves.
