Singing Teachers’ Experiences of Popular Music Styles
A survey of UK singing teachers’ experiences of Popular Music styles at Higher Education level (students 18+)
Jo Sear, singer, teacher and Phd student researcher at the Royal Northern College of Music is inviting your participation in her study. The purpose of this survey (see link below) is to investigate UK singing teachers’ experiences of teaching Popular Music styles to HE students (age 18+), including information on teachers’ educational/training backgrounds and their levels of preparedness for, and experience in, teaching these genres. The survey will take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. Note: To reflect usage within the established field of popular music education research, the term ‘popular music’ (PM) is used throughout the survey. For the purposes of this study, the umbrella term Popular Music (PM) includes pop, rock, soul, R&B, funk, hip hop/rap, indie and metal genres. I have chosen not to use the alternative term ‘Contemporary Commercial Music (CCM)’ as this umbrella term has often included Musical Theatre singing, now considered in a number of studies to be very different in performance context and industry requirements from PM singing.
