How Brains Learn: Myth Busting Motor Learning
Tuesday 28 July 19:00 GMT on Zoom
John Nix with Jenevora Williams (host)
Motor learning is a hot topic in modern voice training – but how do you separate the important information from popular myths about how humans learn? This session is designed to answer questions you have – literally! John Nix from the University of Texas at San Antonio will be Jenevora Williams’ guest on 28th July, responding to questions submitted by BVA members in advance.
If you have questions about how to structure practice and lessons, how to give feedback to clients, where your clients’ attention should be as they practice, or other questions related to how best to structure teaching to enhance learning, this is your chance to get answers.

John Nix is Professor of Voice and Voice Pedagogy at the University of Texas-San Antonio. Current and former students have sung with the Met (NYC), Santa Fe, Arizona, Chautauqua, St. Louis, Nevada, Omaha, and San Antonio opera companies, and two have served as NATS Intern Master Teachers.
John has published more than 50 articles and 10 book chapters; he also co-chairs the NATS Voice Science Advisory Committee, is a co-founder of the NATS Pedagogy Institute, serves as an Associate Editor for The Journal of Singing, and is a member of the American Academy of Teachers of Singing, where he serves as Secretary. Mr. Nix is editor and annotator of From Studio to Stage: Repertoire for the Voice (Scarecrow, 2002), vocal music editor for the Oxford Handbook of Music Education (OUP, 2012), one of three general editors for the Oxford Handbook of Singing (OUP, 2019), and one of two general editors (with Leda Scearce) for the forthcoming Oxford Handbook of Voice Pedagogy (OUP, pending early 2027).
TALK VOICE is an online lecture series about the speaking voice – how it works and what to do when it doesn’t: how it communicates, how to take care of it, how to enhance its performance and effectiveness. The Talk Voice series offers a range of presenters – providers of specialist therapy, treatment and surgery, vocal coaches, professional voice users and those who’ve suffered voice issues. Our speakers so far have included Mark Mardell, Polly Evans, Dr. Nikos Spantideas, Dr. Tom Harris, Barbara Houseman, D’Arcy Smith and many more.
